Important update 
regarding Healthscope

What is changing?

From 4 March 2025 Healthscope Group of Hospitals (Healthscope) will no longer be part of AIA Health’s participating private hospital list.
 
AIA Health is committed to providing our members with high quality and affordable private hospital cover. That’s why we have agreements with over 500 private hospitals and day surgeries across Australia.
 
Healthscope, representing 38 of these agreement hospitals, has made the decision to terminate its contract with AIA Health and the majority of Private Health Insurers. Healthscope has sought to impose an additional fee on our members who are treated in Healthscope hospitals. After ongoing negotiations, we have been unable to reach an agreement that we believe is fair for our members.
 
As a result, Healthscope have made the decision to not comply with our current agreed contract and have terminated our agreement effective from 4 March 2025.

Does this impact hospital admissions?

For admissions booked before 4 March 2025:

If you have a pre-booked admission at a Healthscope hospital before 4 March 2025, you will not be impacted. You can still attend your admission at a Healthscope hospital and AIA Health will pay benefits towards the cost of your treatment or service (provided it is covered under your AIA Health policy).

For admissions after 4 March 2025:

For admissions that fall under the below treatment types, the following arrangements apply:

Non-pregnancy related treatment booked prior to 4 March 2025 6 months On or before 3 September 2025
Ongoing courses of treatment in place by 3 March 2025 (including chemotherapy, renal dialysis, psychiatric and rehabilitation) 6 months On or before 3 September 2025
Pregnancy treatment booked prior to 4 March 2025 9 months On or before 3 December 2025
If you’re booked into a Healthscope hospital after 4 March 2025 and your admission does not fall under one of the treatment types listed, you are likely to face additional out-of-pocket costs. AIA Health will no longer cover the same level of cost of the treatment or service for that admission on or after 4 March 2025.
 
We encourage you to discuss your situation with your treating doctor and ask if they have admitting rights at another participating hospital. This can help minimise out-of-pocket costs.

AIA Health Insurance is a member of the Australian Health Service Alliance (AHSA), who has held contracts with Healthscope for many years.
 
In March 2024, AIA Health renewed our contract with Healthscope, which included annual funding increases.
 
Recently, Healthscope claimed that AHSA funds were not paying their fair share of hospital costs. Healthscope is seeking to impose an additional ‘Hospital Facility Fee’ on AIA Health Insurance members who attend its hospitals.
 
We will not accept the additional fee as we do not want AIA Health Insurance members to be charged for an unnecessary hospital-imposed fee and have increased out-of-pocket costs. This fee was not part of the contract Healthscope signed with AIA Health in March 2024.
 
As a result, Healthscope has made the decision to terminate our agreement effective from 4 March 2025.
