AIA Australia has recently released its 5590+ framework. The report builds upon our previous 4490 insight, which aligned with previous evidence and data on global disease which stated that four modifiable lifestyle factors – physical inactivity, poor nutrition, smoking and excess alcohol – led to four major NCDs – cancer, diabetes, respiratory and heart diseases –responsible for 90 per cent of deaths in Australia. In recognition of this, AIA Australia had termed the insight 4490 (4 + 4 = 90; 4490).
The 5590+ framework recognises the role of a fifth modifiable risk factor: our interaction with the environment, and a fifth NCD: mental health conditions and disorders. While these statistics are concerning, we have the ability to take small steps to improve our health and wellbeing, and ultimately reduce our risk of developing a NCD.
