Small somethings: mindfulness in 10 minutes
Supported by AIA Vitality, ‘WellBeings’ is a podcast about the science of feeling good. Here we look at simple steps to improve wellbeing, taken from host Dominic Bowden’s conversation with ex-Navy Seal and founder of wellness program ‘Made For’, Pat Dossett.
Our lives constantly throw sources of anxiety our way: whether it’s job loss, divorce, disease, or just feeling overwhelmed. The hope with the WellBeings community is to offer support and help people take back control of their lives.
The challenge is where to start. Think about one small action that’ll give you control and reduce that feeling of helplessness: it might be getting out into nature, spending less time glued to your phone or even stopping for a minute to perform a breathing exercise. The most important thing is being aware of these simple things, noticing what works for you, then using them to bring your routine back into a steady flow.
As a quick takeaway from the episode, here are three tips from Dominic’s conversation with Pat Dossett on how to achieve wellness in your life.
1. Be kind to yourself
It’s easy to beat yourself up for not exercising, drinking enough water or spending too much time on a screen. It’s just like Pat Dossett says: “Even if you have the best of intentions, there are always going to be hiccups or things you can’t control.”
Remember to be kind to yourself and focus on the things you can control.
2. Start small
We tend to overcommit when we’re trying to achieve a personal goal. Instead of the small changes, it can be all about getting a six-pack a month before summer or doing an iron man. In other words: putting yourself in a place where it’s hard not to fail.
These big goals are often outside the normal rhythms of our life – so when we misstep, it’s easy to say something like, “I’ll do that next year,” instead of continuing the journey.
Achieving wellness is all about forming habits from small steps. This helps us see the gradual results that can lead to real, permanent changes in our life and mindset.
3. Support greatly helps
Any amount of support we give to each other – our loved ones, work colleagues or even people we meet on the street – really matters. You’re a lot more likely to succeed in your personal goals when you share them with a friend.
Take it from Pat: “Find like-minded people that can help reinforce what you want to do and support you in getting there. You’ll go much further with others than you will alone.”
