With so much choice available – from brands to bottles, formulations, iterations and promotions – finding skincare products you like can feel like an impossible task. When you do stumble on a combination of products that work – ones that leave your skin feeling comfortable, clean and calm – you wouldn’t be blamed for wanting to stick with them forever.
But as the seasons change, so do the effects on our skin. The thicker moisturiser that felt good in winter might feel heavy and sticky in summer, and the sweat caused by warmer weather can contribute to spots and inflammatory skin conditions such as rosacea1 that require specific treatment.
So how do you know when it’s time to swap up your products? When it comes down to it, the best thing we can do for our skin is to listen to what it’s trying to tell us.
For instance, when wake up in the morning, in the middle of winter and your skin’s all dry,its probably trying to tell you that it needs moisturiser. The same goes when you get out of the shower and look in the mirror, observe if your skin needs a little more nurturing.
Remember updating your routine for summer doesn't just mean staying away from heavier formulas.
There will be days during the summer when you feel dry, especially if you’ve been sitting in front of an air conditioning unit all day. This will tend to dry you out, so don’t be strict and regimented about your skincare routine. It should be flexible – you can change it daily if you want to.
Everyone’s skin is different, so updating your skin routine for summer isn’t prescriptive. Listening to your skin is the first step. Incorporating some hero ingredients is the next.
