If you enjoy life.
00:12
Hi, I'm Shane Crawford, I'm an AIA ambassador
00:15
and you have found me here in Manningham, which is in Melbourne's north east,
00:19
where it's been recently revealedthat they are some of the healthiest
00:22
in all of Australia.
00:24
So I'm here to uncover the secrets onwhy the residents are living
00:28
a healthier, longer, better life. As a lifehealth and wellbeing insurer.
00:33
AIA Australia is on a mission to make Australia the healthiest country
00:37
it can be.
00:38
That's why they've uncovered Australia's healthiest locations
00:42
the AIA Vitality Zones.
00:45
AIA Vitality Zones research has uncoveredextensive data across everyday behaviors
00:50
like eating physical exercise, planning,
00:54
our interaction with the environment and our mental health.
00:57
Manningham and Nillumbik in outerMelbourne, Victoria have some of the
01:01
lowest rates of health riskfactors, illness and preventable deaths.
01:06
But it's not just this factthat makes them healthy.
01:09
AIA Vitality Zones are thrivingwhen it comes to their mental
01:12
wellbeing, exercise, preventative mindset, nutrition and their environment.
01:18
It's further out from the city, which I guess plays a role.
01:21
There's a lot of, I guess
01:23
green space around and you see peoplejust in the morning, just even on walks.
01:33
A lot of that population is attending a lot of exercise classes
01:37
and wellbeing classes. They do lots of yoga and Pilates and dance.
01:41
So yeah, it's a lot of fitness. And walk! Walk the dog.
01:44
AIA Vitality Zones engagein similar levels of physical activity
01:48
as the rest of Australia.
01:49
What they do differently is more moderateexercise more often.
01:53
They're doing it consistently. From parks, reserves,
01:56
walking and cycling tracks, community spaces and facilities.
02:00
Residents in the AIA VitalityZone of Manningham are moving more
02:06
and they're even doing karate.
02:12
We did a trial sessionand the residents loved it,
02:16
and from there it'sjust kind of taken on a life of its own.
02:19
I always ask the question, you know, what do you get out of it?
02:21
What do you enjoy the most?
02:23
And the feedbackundoubtedly is it's the exercise
02:26
and it's the social element as well.
02:29
Prioritising prevention and being proactive abouthealth and wellbeing are
02:34
behaviors embraced by AIA Vitality Zones.
02:38
They get higher levels of sleep each monthand are more health literate
02:42
and confident in communicating their health care needs.
02:45
Vitality Zones are more likely to accesshealth care, with the highest rates
02:49
seen in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales.
02:54
It bring your elbow in.
02:55
Walking into this dojo is like you're pressing a reset button on me.
03:06
No matter how my day was, no matter
03:09
what's in my mind, as soon as I stepon these mats, it just kind of goes quiet.
03:13
A lot of people are trainingfor mental health reasons,
03:15
and that's what I'm really passionate about.
03:17
So that's why I love being in the industry.
03:18
People come in and they catch up.
03:21
Guys train together, girls train together.
03:23
So it's become definitely a social aspect as well.
03:26
Nutrition is a standout characteristic of AIA Vitality Zones
03:30
who understand the importanceof preparing nutritious meals at home,
03:34
opting for healthy foodchoices, and limiting portion sizes.
03:38
The farm is 100 acres big.
03:44
This orchard actually originatedback in the 1850s.
03:46
I've grown many, many different varieties,so I've recreated the whole orchard.
03:50
Australians living in Vitality Zones are eating healthier.
03:53
They're doing this by small changes.
03:56
They're simple and are small swapsthat can have a huge impact.
04:00
More encouragement from me would be of eating
04:04
fruit and veg seasonal. To actually come out and have a look
04:08
and actually look for themselveswhere things have actually grown.
04:12
So what is it that makes theseVitality Zones healthier places?
04:16
The answer, it's not one single action, but a multitude of positive behaviors
04:21
that ultimately make them the healthiest in the country.
04:25
If you don't look after yourself, who else is going to?
04:28
You've only got one body.
