Meet Sam

Sam*, a 59-year-old male, ceased work in his occupations as a disability support and community support worker due to squamous cell carcinoma (tongue cancer). His work included supporting people with a disability to access their community through outings, supporting day to day chores and appointments, and support in house for people who have high needs disability including doing laundry, general cleaning, shopping and hygiene.

He underwent surgery to remove the cancer, but following this he experienced full body weakness, physical and cognitive fatigue, frozen right shoulder and limited mobility with overhead movements.

Sam returned to work partially, however, continued to experience fatigue and frozen shoulder issues and so was referred for rehabilitation support. An exercise rehabilitation program was developed to support him to build his functional capacity and confidence with work and home. It included gym-based strength and endurance-based exercises with an accredited Exercise Physiologist as well as fatigue management strategies to improve his tolerances for work and activities of daily living.

At the end of the program Sam advised that he now experiences very minimal fatigue symptoms, that his sleep has improved, and he is managing better with his activities of daily living.
He was able to fully return to both jobs and provided the following feedback about the rehabilitation serviced provided:
"(Rehabilitation) was able to quickly identify what I needed and set a very effective program for me. I made quick improvement and was back to my previous self in good time… My experience was excellent."
